Nada Jolic's links

Nada is a web designer, poet and journalist - she has researched these links for 'those who are interested in learning more about some of the artists, musicians, and mythology explored, or briefly mentioned in Liz Berry's books, in particular, Easy Connections, Easy Freedom and The China Garden.' Thanks a lot, Nada!

'I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge - that myth is more potent than history.  I believe that dreams are more powerful than facts - that hope always triumphs over experience - that laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death.'  - Robert Fulghum

Easy Connections and Easy Freedom
Chapter 1 (Easy Connections)

Nicholas de Stael
Nicholas de Stael was an artist best known for his abstract art, although he originally painted still-life and portraits before the second World War.  He committed suicide in l955.

'I lose touch with what I am doing from one moment to the next, find it again and lose it...It has to be this way, for I believe in chance...One never paints what one is looking at, or thinks one is looking at.  One paints in a thousand vibrations the shock which one has received.' - Nicholas de Stael.

Although this site is in French, it offers thumbnail pics that you can enlarge to view his great paintings, including 'The Musicians' (most probably the painting that Cathy is talking about when she first goes to Dev's house at Cox's farm).

Kokoschka (page 72)
Kokoschka was a Viennese abstract expressionist painter. When Cathy says she wants to paint portraits like Kokoschka's she probably means that she wants to paint 'psychological' portraits that say much about the subject.
